The VMA's dedicated the night to Jackson with a retro-music video montage as a tribute. The awards were held a few months after Michael Jackson died. Comedian Russell Brand hosted the event for the second time in a row. For 2010, she was nominated for 13 awards for her songs " Bad Romance" and " Telephone", breaking the record for most nominations ever in a single year and also became the first female solo artist to ever receive two nominations for 'Video of the Year'. In 2009, Gaga tied with Beyoncé for most nominations with 9 and won 3 awards tying with Green Day and Beyoncé. Having to relive lyrics like, “I can’t believe what I saw when I turned on the TV, this evening,” while keeping it together, Janet displayed not only poise but for the first time a true vulnerability that i have never seen from her. Janet Jackson’s tear duct tickling tribute to her late brother Michael had the potential to bomb like a Britney Spears take two (let’s not rehash). Either way it was the bee’s knees (I still don’t get that expression) so it comes in at numero dos. Not only did she make it a key component on her current tour but when she opened for Justin Timberlake awhile back she was climbing ropes and dancing on silk just as much. P!nk has been rocking the trapeze thing for a while. I love this woman more than those Olive Garden breadsticks so to see her all whirling about while belting out lyrics is like dipping a fresh hot stick in that fatty-ass salad dressing. Let me get this out there, P!nk was effing awesome. Oh and in all honesty, “Empire State of Mind” has to be my favorite song from Jay’s latest album, so that probably has a lot to do with the placement of this performance. Ding bats aside, Alicia’s buttery voice and Jay-Z’s impeccable stage presence made for an audio adrenaline overload. Hey Lil’ Mama, what the hell was that! I’m not sure who is working security over there at MTV these days, maybe it’s Tracy Morgan, but how do these people just get up on stage whenever they want. But overall this number was just about as predictable as the last 10 minutes of “Titanic.” On the other hand B’s vocals were pretty damn flawless and it was nice that they could cash in on those green lights one more time after the “Thriller” routine (lighting is like way ‘spency guys). You can dance, we get it, and you are damn good at it, we get it. However, I’m just tired of this same ol’ bounce around routine. I’m sure you think Beyonce deserves better.
In the past years they have awkwardly tried different ways of having artists perform outside of the actual venue, all failing to feel like an actual part of the show until now. Taylor’s adorably creative performance was a step in the right direction for MTV. I want to be a ringlet in Taylor Swift’s flowing locks of talent filled hair. That combined with Catholicism art work and a bedazzled wheelchair almost had me reaching for the FFWD button. Here are my top six favorites for you to relive in play-pressing pleasureĬramming crazy down our faces, in true GaGa fashion, miss thang brought exactly what I was expecting: a bit of glamour, a bit of shock-and-awe and a whole lotta “what the nuts!” Although the lazy way in which she belted out “Paparazzi” was totally unexpected. With a blood dripping - yet kinda forced - set from Lady GaGa, a gorgeous acrobatic concerto from the effortless P!nk and a “Single Ladies” bombardment of leotard overload, old memories of the pop glitz that used to be synonymous with the MTV VMAs finally jumped back into focus. I would like to think part of the night’s unquestionable success has to do with the network putting a focus back on the music. A Janet Jackson tribute to Michael kicked off some of the best VMA stingers we’ve seen in years! From Taylor Swift’s adorable subterranean set co-starring the gritty F train to a Jay-Z/Alicia Keys duet, this year music was brought back to the masses … just in the nick of time.
